The Chief Executive of Irish Water Safety has urged people to take care around water, particularly in the hot weather.

The warning comes after a 25-year-old man drowned in an incident in Carrick on Suir, Co Tipperary yesterday.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, John Leech said it was crucial that swimmers remembered to stay in their depth and swim parallel to the shore.

He added that drinking alcohol and swimming is not recommended.

Mr Leech urged schools to teach water safety programmes and life-saving techniques in primary school.

He said this would save lives in the future.
