An additional 300 homes are to be made available in Galway over the next 18 months as part of a joint venture between Co-Operative Housing Ireland and Galway City Council.
The scheme will cost €3.8m.
The first tranche of apartments and townhouses will open in the Doughiska area of Galway city and 23 families are ready to move in.
Some of those are drawn from the city council waiting list, while others are coming out of homelessness or overcrowded accommodation.
Residents will become shareholders in their local co-op and will have a say in the management of their community.
The Maigh Rua apartments mark the first roll-out of co-operative houses by CHI in the west of Ireland.
A further 90 units are under development in Galway city and 200 additional homes are planned for the wider region in the coming 12 to 18 months.
