Brexit

Phil Hogan's position on the Brexit negotiations provides the lead story in both the Irish Independent and Irish Times this morning.

"Brexit is a mess and is only getting messier".
That's a quote from the EU Commissioner which is carried on the front of today's Independent...where Mr Hogan says that the future of the peace process is central to Ireland's case in Brexit negotiations.

Based on a piece which he has written for today's paper the Irish Times leads with the Commissioner's call for a shift in our relationship with the EU.

For its lead story the Irish Examiner reports on a backlash against the surge in solar farms being built across the country and a lack of planning guidelines to regulate them.

"Shocking misuse of ambulance services"

That's the lead headline in today's Irish Daily Mail which is based on comments made by unnamed paramedics who tell today's paper that many people dial 999 instead of visiting their family doctor...or an A&E department on the basis that they are likely to get seen more quickly if they arrive by ambulance.

Shane MacGowan

The Irish Sun runs with a picture of Shane MacGowan attending the funeral of his mother Therese in a wheelchair on its front page today.
And indeed all of today's papers report on the funeral which took place in SIlvermines, Co Tipperary yesterday.

"The Big Freeze"
That's the lead headline on the front of today's Irish Daily Mirror which reports on the weather conditions which have resulted in the death of 20 people across Europe which could be on the way here.

Elsewhere on the front pages:

ASTI members face a loss of up to 30,000 euro each if they reject the latest proposals to settle their long-running pay row over pay and junior cycle reform. That's on the front of the Irish Independent.

The Irish Times reports on a drop-out rate of 70% in some college courses and also on the failure to deliver on the promise to cull quangos...made by Fine Gael and Labour in the run-up to the 2011 General Election.

All of today's papers carry reports on the first programme in RTE's "Dancing with the Stars" which went to air last night.
The Examiner's Connall O'Fatharta describes the show as "hitting all the right notes".
Writing in The Irish Times Laura Slattery gives a mixed but generally, positive review while Ian O'Doherty gives it a bit of a kicking in the Independent.
