One of the biggest outdoor theatre companies in the world, the French company Royal De Luxe will perform its 'Giant Saga' during three shows in September in Limerick.

It will be the company's first trip to Ireland and one of just three cities it will visit this year.

The company will bring its giant puppets and performers to the city.

It will create an original story around Ireland and Limerick, to be performed on the streets of Limerick over three days from 5 to 7 September.

Representatives of the company have already paid a number of visits to the city to check out its history and to survey a number of possible routes which will act as its street story trail.

The show is estimated to cost €1.2m to mount and is a major technical show given the size of the giants and other theatrical infrastructure involved.

Limerick City of Culture Director Mike Fitzpatrick said it was a major achievement to get Royal De Luxe to include a visit to Limerick as part of their very tight schedule this year.

"They only perform at three venues a year, but we managed to convince them to travel to be our big international act for our year as City of Culture", he said.

They expect that up to 200,000 will see the outdoor theatre show over the three days and that it will attract visitors from right across the country.

18 million people have seen Royal De Luxe perform all over the world in the past 10 years.
