Donegal County Council has appealed to the public not to supply waste material to people for bonfires in the run up to Halloween after it removed three tonnes of waste from a location in the county.

The council is monitoring a number of locations in Donegal where waste material has been gathered before for bonfires.

It said it is illegal for people to give waste to anyone who does not hold a valid waste collection permit.

The county's Acting Chief Fire Officer, Joseph McTaggart, has also urged people not to light bonfires.

He said they can cause serious damage and injuries, particularly where highly combustible materials are being burned.
