The Defence Forces has dismissed as "pure speculation" reports that around 30 members of the elite Army Ranger Wing are to be deployed to tackle Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean.
A spokesman said approaches had been made several months ago for a group of Rangers to serve with the EU Naval Force in protecting ships involved with the World Food Programme.
However, Commandant Denis Hanly said the mission posed huge logistical and operational challenges.
He described reports of Ireland's involvement as premature and speculative.
Cmdt Hanly said the military authorities have not yet given their advice on the proposal to the Department of Defence.
He said if the deployment was to go ahead it would need the approval of the United Nations, the Cabinet and the Dáil.
Cmdt Hanly said a decision on the issue is several months away.
