Dept of Agriculture lifts bird flu restrictions in Cork

Restrictions imposed following the single outbreak of avian flu in pheasants in Clonakilty, Co Cork, before Easter have been lifted.

The restrictions included a prohibition on movements of poultry within a 1km zone and additional surveillance.

Samples from the one commercial poultry holding within the 1km zone taken during the 21-day period since the restriction zone was put in place have been negative for any virus.

There have been no new outbreaks of avian flu in the restriction zone.

The Department of Agriculture said the incident, where low pathogenic avian influenza H5N2 was found, was a reminder of the continued need for vigilance and good bio-security practices where poultry or other captive birds are concerned.
