There are a total of 228 children on the waiting list for spinal surgeries at Children's Hospital Ireland, according to the latest Spinal Service Waiting List figures released by CHI.
This includes 137 children who are described as "actively waiting" for their surgeries.
According to CHI, these patients are "ready for surgery and waiting for a scheduled date for admission in the future" to correct scoliosis.
31 of the 228 children have a planned procedure, while a further 20 have been assigned a date for their surgery.
The remaining 40 children are classified as "suspended".
CHI has said this designation includes patients suspended "because of clinical reasons (9), personal reasons (5), or because they are confirmed to have their surgery in another hospital under a CHI initiative (26)."
The report also provides information on surgeries that have been carried out so far this year.
A total of 123 surgeries were carried out in the first three months of 2025.
During the same time, 144 new spinal procedures were added to the waiting list after outpatient assessment.
Of those who are yet to have surgery, 18 children have been waiting longer than one year, with some waiting up to four years.
Earlier this week, a HIQA report revealed the use of unapproved implantable springs in spinal surgery at Temple Street Children's Hospital.
In today’s report, the Head of the Spinal Surgery Management Unit Mr David Moore said: "We acknowledge the publication of HIQA report this week, and do not underestimate the impact that this has on the families affected.
"The Spinal Surgery Management Unit will continue to develop and implement important quality measures and patient education resources."
Mr Moore said CHI aims to have a new Consultant Spinal Surgeon in post in the summer which, he said, will "further bolster our efforts to reduce the waiting list for spinal surgery and the length of time that patients are waiting."
