The Patient Safety Act is to come into force in the coming days.

This will provide for the mandatory open disclosure of a list of serious patient safety incidents to patients and/or their families.

It also provides for the mandatory external notification to various regulatory bodies.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said a number of preparatory steps were needed to enable the commencement of the 2023 Act, including a new national incident management system to record notifications under the law.

Today is World Patient Safety Day and the Department of Health's national patient safety office is holding a conference in Dublin to mark the occasion.
