There are 71 patients on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick, according to the latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

Overall, there were 484 patients waiting for a bed at hospitals nationwide at 8am, with 343 in emergency departments and 141 on wards elsewhere in the hospital.

The INMO said there were 48 patients waiting for a bed at University Hospital Galway, and 47 in Cork University Hospital.

South Tipperary General Hospital and the Mater Hospital in Dublin, were also among the worst hit hospitals, with 43 and 32 patients respectively waiting for a bed.
