The INMO said that overall there are 426 patients on trolleys in emergency departments and on wards in hospitals around the country.

There are 42 on trolleys at Cork University Hospital and 37 at University Hospital Waterford.

The INMO said that at 8am there were 298 admitted patients waiting in emergency departments and 128 on wards.

Yesterday, UHL urged people not to attend its emergency department unless absolutely necessary due to the high number of patients there.

The Health Service Executive's TrolleyGar figures - which only count emergency departments - put the overcrowding figure at 300.
