There are 582 patients on trolleys in emergency departments or on wards waiting admission to a hospital bed, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

The worst affected hospital is University Hospital Limerick with 63 patients on trolleys.

The INMO said there are 40 patients waiting admission to a hospital bed at St Luke's General Hospital, Kilkenny, with 35 at University Hospital Waterford and 35 at South Tipperary General Hospital.

408 patients are on trolleys in emergency departments around the country with 174 in wards.
