The figures are down on the same day last year, where there were 643 patients waiting for admission to a hospital bed.

The worst affected hospitals are University Hospital Limerick with 69 patients waiting; Cork University Hospital with 52 and University Hospital Galway with 43.

There are five children waiting for admission to a hospital bed, two at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin, and three at Temple Street.
