Around 120 extra paramedics are to be employed around the country this year by the National Ambulance Service, a delegation of politicians from Galway has been told.

Minister of State Seán Kyne, Fine Gael Deputy Hildegarde Naughton and Independent Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh attended a meeting with the National Ambulance Service at its headquarters in Tallaght in Dublin.

The delegation was told that six to eight extra paramedics are to be employed in Galway this year.

The National Ambulance Service also said it is working on developing an effective network of first responders around the country.

The NAS told the delegation that it intends to conduct a study in the coming months on its services in Conamara and how best they can be linked with other systems in the area.

The meeting was called in light of concerns about ambulance response times in Conamara recently.
