Would today's 4x4s cope any better with this sort of snow drift?
Clearing roads back then wasn't much fun.A snow plough battles through the drifts. If you can't get through the snow, maybe you can go over it...This baby has probably grown up to tell their kids they never took snow days.A sheep is forced to resort to eating gorse bushes.Farmers dig the body of an even less fortunate sheep out of the snow.A man tries to open a frozen window......I'm not sure the ladder manufacturers would endorse this sort of use. This man seems to have decided that a snowcovered mountain is the best place to try out his motorbike.A man jumps into a drift......and sinks up to his waist. This man atop a telegraph pole gives some idea of how deep the drifts were in places.A man tries to clear ice from a telephone mast.A few opportunists decide to take advantage of the conditions and do a little skiing. Some of them could perhaps have done with a lesson or two.It does look pretty - I wonder how long it took for the novelty to wear off back then.
