An Irish man has been arrested in Spain in connection with an ongoing garda investigation into the activities of an organised crime group based in Dublin and Spain.

The gardaí are seeking the man's extradition back to Ireland to face charges.

The man, who is 37, was arrested by officers from the Spanish National Police in Lanzarote on foot of an extradition warrant issued by the High Court in Dublin.

He is being detained in Spain and can decide to contest the charges or agree to be escorted back to Ireland.

The arrest is part of a garda investigation which has been ongoing for the past five years.

Officers from the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation have been investigating alleged links between gardaí and members of a transnational organised crime group, the movements of large sums of money and the purchase of a number of properties in Spain.
