A suspect has been detained by police after two people were killed in a shooting in Switzerland.
A third person was injured in the attack in the southern town of Sion shortly before 8am (7am Irish time).
Several shots were fired in two areas of the town, police in the canton of Valais said.
The victims were a 34-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man who lived in Sion, they added.
A major operation had been under way for hours to find the 36-year-old man suspected of carrying out the attack, a rare event in Switzerland.
Officers "arrested the suspected gunman at 3:43 pm (2.43pm Irish time) in the St-Leonard area," the Valais canton police said in a statement.
The first victim - the 34-year-old woman - had allegedly been harassed by the suspect "on several occasions to have a relationship," the regional daily Le Nouvelliste reported, adding that legal proceedings had been opened in the matter.
The 41-year-old man was a manager of a local company where the gunman had worked, the newspaper added.
The suspect also wounded a 49-year-old secretary at the same company.
Numerous heavily-armed police earlier in the day had been patrolling the highway into Sion and searching the town for man, whom they described as "dangerous".
The local public prosecutor's office said it has launched a murder investigation.
Switzerland has a high rate of gun ownership.
The Swiss-based Small Arms Survey research group estimates that in a country of around nine million people, civilians own about 2.3 million firearms.
