The EU's top human rights award, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, has been awarded to the people of Ukraine and their representatives.

Announced by the European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, she said that the award was in recognition of the "brave" struggle of the people of Ukraine over the past nine months, from soldiers on the ground to those forced to flee their home country.

"The people of Ukraine are also risking their lives for Europe to safeguard the values that we all believe in", she told MEPs.

An official prize giving ceremony is scheduled for December.

The person who will accept the award on Ukraine's behalf is yet to be decided.

Other nominees on the shortlist for this year's Sakharov Prize were WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange, and the Colombian Truth Commission.
