Gerard Hutch, the man known as 'The Monk', has said he intends to officially register as a candidate to run in the General Election.

In a video posted on X that showed him speaking to members of the media in Dublin Airport, Mr Hutch said that he was "100%" going to "go for it" and that he would register "today, if it's possible".

He refused to comment on his policies and when asked about whose seat was most at risk with him running, Mr Hutch said: "I don’t know, any seat will do me."

Mr Hutch has been described by the Special Criminal Court as the head of the Hutch family.

He had been in custody in Lanzarote since the end of October after being arrested by Spanish police investigating money laundering.

In the video, Mr Hutch said he was "innocent" in relation to the Spanish investigation and that he did not think it would impact his ability to run in the election.

The 61-year-old was given back his passport last week when he was granted bail of €100,000 while a police investigation continues.

Mr Hutch’s legal counsel had indicated to a court in Spain that he intended to stand for election and required his passport to do so.
