Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said that he has no responsibility to investigate the murder of Brian Stack and that that responsibility lies with An Garda Síochána.

In an interview on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, he said he had facilitated a process that led to the family meeting with a former IRA member who gave them an explanation and an apology.

Brian Stack, a father of three, was chief prison officer at Portlaoise Prison. He was shot by the IRA in 1983 and died 18 months later from his injuries.

Mr Adams said that he understood a number of people have been questioned about the shooting.

Also in the interview, Mr Adams said the current government could have done more to build affordable social housing and that, if elected, Sinn Féin has a costed plan to build 36,000 houses in the first term of the next Dáil. He added that the housing crisis had become a housing emergency.

He went on to say that many people do not feel a recovery because for them, there has not been a recovery.

Mr Adams said "this isn't a pub quiz" when questioned about the amounts the party would raise by various taxation measures outlined in its manifesto but said all Sinn Fein's proposals had been costed.

He said the abolition of Irish Water and the property tax would save people between €400 and €500 a year.

When questioned about Thomas ‘Slab’ Murphy, Mr Adams said that everybody should pay their taxes.

Mr Adams concluded the interview by saying that if Sinn Féin got into government, he would like to take a ministry if that is what the party desires.

Asked if he would run again after this election, he replied "let's take one election at a time, sweet Jesus".
