Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has said that he never covered up anything to do with sex abuse.

Mr Adams was responding to questions about his handling of abuse allegations made by Mr Adams’s niece about his brother.

Speaking on Cork's Red FM, Mr Adams said he did nothing wrong in his handling of what he described as a wounding family situation saying he did the best he could.

Mr Adams also said that he will bow out as party leader "at some point" saying: "If I had sense I'd go and get a life but I believe in what I'm doing."

He said whoever will go on to lead Sinn Féin will receive a negative response.

He also rejected suggestions that the party is making policies up as it goes along.

Mr Adams said he did not regard his comment about Thomas Slab Murphy being "a good republican" or his criticism of the Special Criminal Court as "foot-in-mouth moments".

He said he was not a spokesperson for Murphy, who he said he had never heard called 'Slab'.
