Frank McBrearty Jnr is to run as an Independent candidate for Donegal in the General Election.

Mr McBrearty, who came to national prominence as a result of the Morris Tribunal, is a publican and councillor on Donegal County Council.

He ran for the Labour Party in the 2010 Donegal South West by-election, which was won by Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty.

Mr McBrearty Jnr left the Labour Party in 2013.

Following the Morris Tribunal, which found that members of the Gardaí attempted to frame Mr McBrearty Jnr and his cousin Mark McConnell for the murder of Richie Barron in October 1996, Mr McBrearty sued the state.

In September 2005, he settled a number of claims including alleged malicious prosecution and wrongful arrest for €1.5 million.

Mr McBrearty launched his campaign at Raphoe Boxing Club with boxer Jason Quigley.

The former Mayor of Donegal said he always intended to run for the Dáil and it was solidified following the RTÉ Investigates programme on standards in public office.

He said: "It's time for the people of Donegal to have the choice to elect a strong and trusted independent voice, someone who is willing to ask the questions that need to be asked."
