Minister for Education Norma Foley has said that Junior Cycle exam results are due out on 18 October.

The results will be available from schools and from 4pm, be accessed online.

Speaking in Tipperary she said: "I can confirm that the State Examination Commission have confirmed to me that the Junior Cycle results will issue on 18 October."

"I know that there are students the length and breadth of the country eagerly anticipating that date, as are schools and school staff," she added.

Ms Foley was speaking as Fianna Fáil's parliamentary party gathered for a two-day think-in.

The 2022 results were issued on 23 November last year, which the SEC said was due to a number of factors "which included the later issue date for the Leaving Certificate results and, most especially, the impact of an acute shortage of teachers to mark the examinations".

In a statement, it said: "In 2023, a combination of a much-improved examiner supply situation and the use of online marking in almost all Junior Cycle subjects has meant that it is possible to deliver these results five weeks earlier than last year."

In a statement, the Teachers' Union of Ireland said the announcement will provide "clarity for students, their families and schools".

It added: "We also note that this year’s date is over a month earlier than that of last year."

The Irish Second-Level Students' Union (ISSU) Education Officer, Heather Doyle said that secondary school students are delighted to see a results date announced for the Junior Cycle.

She said that it is a stressful time when you do not know when the results are coming, and it almost prolongs the stress of exam periods, as you have a type of "PTSD until the results come out".

Ms Doyle said that for those who went into fifth year last year who did not get results until November, it made an impact on choices in terms of Leaving Certificate subjects.

Now students can see what subjects they do want to do for Leaving Cert based on their results, she said.

She added that the ISSU would always like to see earlier exam results but the organisation understands the delay was due to lack of teachers available to correct exams.
