More than half of the students who sat last year's deferred Leaving Certificate exams got good news of improved grades when they received their results today.
Last November and December, 2,155 candidates sat the exams with 1,136 due to receive grades higher than their calculated grade in one or more of their subjects.
Students who participated in the exams sat an average of two subjects each.
For those students who had already received calculated grades, 39% of the grades awarded today were higher than the calculated grade they achieved, 28% were the same, and 34% were lower.
Any result received today that was higher automatically supersedes the lower calculated grade. But students who received a higher grade under the calculated grades process will not lose that result.
There were 460 students who sat the exams who did not receive any calculated grade in the subjects they were examined in, because they were not studying the topic at school.
All students who received calculated grades last year were given the option of also sitting the exams. While 2,600 initially registered, the number presenting - at 2,155 - was significantly lower.
The State Examinations Commission has sent details of the results to the Central Applications Office (CAO).
Any student who is now entitled to a higher preference in last year's CAO application will be offered a deferred place for the coming academic year.
The results were available online from midday.
Meanwhile, 47 mature students were receiving the results of their Junior Certificate exams.
