New "school zones" are being tried out in Dublin to discourage traffic and stop parents dropping off at school gates.

The area is demarcated by colour circles and pencil-shaped bollards to prevent illegal parking in the vicinity of a school.

Lord Mayor Hazel Chu launched a trial at St Francis CBS in the South Inner City today.

Ms Chu said: "High volumes of vehicles at school gates mean small children have no safe access to school, often having to maneuver around parked and turning vehicles to get into the school grounds."

The HSE released recommendations for the reopening of schools including promoting of active travel or encouraging parents to park further away and then walk with their children to avoid congestion.
