Four new post-primary schools to be established in 2020 will be run by local State education boards while two others will be under the patronage of Educate Together, according to an announcement by the Department of Education.

The four new Education and Training Board (ETB) schools are planned for Blanchardstown, and the Tallaght/Newcastle/Rathcoole areas of Dublin, as well as Kilcock in Co Meath, and the Kilcoole/Greystones area of Co Wicklow.

The two new Educate Together secondary schools will be in Harold's Cross and Goatstown in Dublin.

Patronage was decided based on preferences expressed locally by parents.

The schools are all being established to address growing demographic need in the areas. When fully developed the six new schools will cater for 5,000 students between them.

Teaching at all six schools will be through English.
