With one day left to the start of State examinations, students are being urged to leave their phones out of their bedrooms tonight.

Clinical Psychologist David Coleman said trying to something to wind down tonight will help them sleep better.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Sean O’Rourke, he also said that detailed post-mortems of exams is not always helpful.

He said while analysing papers can be helpful for some people, it can be stressful for many others.

Mr Coleman said parents should do a lot of listening and provide emotional support over the coming weeks.

He encouraged them to inquire about the exams, but a full post-mortem of the paper at home is not helpful.

Career Guidance Teacher Brian Mooney said once the first paper is completed, the exam process becomes normalised.

He said that students now have so much information in their heads that they do not need any more, but they do need to know how to present it and advised them to look at old exam papers.

Mr Mooney also said students should remember that they still have until 1 July to determine what their first preference course is on the CAO.

He added that it was important to remember that there are many options available to students.

On the same programme, Dietician Louise Reynolds, said although parents cannot study for their children, they can help them by providing them with good food and stocking the house with their favourite foods.

She said that students should not rely on coffee and high energy drinks because they interfere with receptors in the brain that help us sleep and advised that they should try and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

She added that students should try and get a good breakfast before they sit exams, but those who do not usually eat breakfast should not force themselves to eat.

Instead they should try and eat a healthy lunch.
