Dublin City Council has installed a limited number of secure cycle lockers in the city centre as part of a pilot project.

Twelve lockers have been opened on Capel Street and Grafton Street, with six lockers installed in each location.

The lockers cost €1 per hour for the first two hours, €2 per hour from the third hour onwards, with a maximum daily fee of €12.

Based on the uptake, the council hopes to install 40 cycle lockers around the city centre.

''These cycle lockers may be a small intervention, but they represent a big shift in how we think about mobility, accessibility and the everyday experience of Dublin," said Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam.

The lockers are intended for short-term use, enabling visitors to securely park their bikes for a few hours while they socialise, shop and dine in the city.

Mr McAdam said that the scheme will provide secure, convenient parking for cyclists in the heart of the city.

"[The scheme] is a practical step forward in building a more active, living and engaged city,'' Mr McAdam said.

The project is being managed by Bleeper on behalf of Dublin City Council.

The council said instructions on how to use a cycle locker will be displayed on its door and that customers will need to download an app and create an account.

''This pilot will help us understand where lockers are most effective and how people use them, shaping future cycling infrastructure that is practical, reliable and supports more people to feel confident cycling into the city for short trips," said Alec Dundon, Senior Executive Engineer of City Centre Projects at Dublin City Council.
