Bus routes which run from Dublin city centre to the Finglas area are to be amended, the National Transport Authority has announced.

In a statement, it said that the alignment of Routes 23 and 24 are to be changed "in response to reliability issues and feedback from passengers and local representatives".

The NTA said that passengers on the Phase 7 bus services in Finglas, including the F spine and Routes 23 and 24, have experienced "persistent reliability challenges" in recent weeks.

Heavy traffic on new bus routes in the city centre has been identified as the main reason behind these challenges, the NTA said, as well as a shortage of Dublin Bus drivers.

However, the NTA said that driver recruitment and adjustments to the bus timetable are to improve after Christmas.

The 23 and 24 Routes currently operate through Bridge Street, High Street and Christchurch which, the NTA says, has limited bus priority measures as well as unpredictable traffic.

It has proposed changing the routes to along the city quays, crossing the River Liffey at O'Connell Bridge or Rosie Hackett Bridge and continuing around Trinity College Dublin to its last stop on Merrion Square.

The NTA said that while longer-term arrangements are under review, the implementation of the new alignment for the routes are expected in the first quarter of next year.
