Luas Red Line to reopen fully tomorrow after fire

Luas Red Line services between Connolly and The Point in Dublin will resume tomorrow, three months after they were curtailed following a fire on a bridge.

The blaze, which broke out at George's Dock in the International Financial Services Centre, caused a gas leak from a nearby gas line and it took a number of hours to be brought under control.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland said that extensive safety repair work and the reconstruction of the bridge have been carried out since the fire in late August and the Commission for Railway Regulation approved the return of services this week.

More than one million journeys are made on Luas Red and Green lines every week and its operator, Transdev Dublin Light Rail, said that around 20,000 of these are on the Connolly to The Point section of the Red Line.

Its Chief Executive Ben Dwars said: "We are delighted to see the completion of the George's Dock Bridge works and to reopen Luas Red Line services between Connolly and The Point.

"Having this section restored in time for the Christmas season is hugely welcome."

The company thanked those involved in the works and Luas passengers for their patience and understanding during the interruption to services.
