A centre which houses around 20 International Protection applicants in Dublin's south inner city was attacked last night.

A small group of people wearing hoods threw objects at the windows and doors of the centre in Dublin 8.

Nobody was injured but windows were broken and residents had to be moved to the rear of the building.

Footage on social media shows shouts of "get them out" as the group attacked the centre.

In a statement, gardaí said: "Gardaí responded to a public order incident where a number of wheelie bins were damaged by fire and windows were broken in the Dublin 8 area at approximately 7.05pm last night."

Local Labour councillor Darragh Moriarty condemned the attack and called for more policing of sites accommodating International Protection applicants.

He said: "It's deeply disturbing to see the targeting of IPAS accommodation in recent nights. It's clear agitators are emboldened by the disgraceful scenes in Citywest in recent days.

"This protest was planned and circulated on social media. Gardai need to do much more to proactively police these smaller sites and protect inhabitants."
