Tributes have been paid to a Dublin man who was killed following a road traffic incident in the US.

John Kirby died in hospital on Wednesday, following an incident involving a truck which happened in Austin, Texas, on Friday 10 of October.

Mr Kirby, who was in his 20s, had been in the US on a J1 visa and was living with two friends.

Blackrock Rugby Football Club has paid tribute to him, saying he "made a huge impact both on and off the field".

In a post on the club's website, Director of Rugby Michael Hearty said that Mr Kirby will be remembered "fondly for his smile, his laughter, and his spirit".

"John had that special kind of presence. A big, infectious smile and a quick sense of humour that could lift the whole dressing room.

"Whether it was during training on a horrible wet Tuesday night or over a pint in the clubhouse, he had a way of making people laugh and feel included.

"He was the sort of teammate you were always happy to see walk through the door."

Mr Hearty also described John as a great worker, adding that "the word 'no' was not in his vocabulary".

He extended his condolences to all of his friends and family.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
