An investigation is continuing into the death of a young boy in the Jobstown area of Tallaght, Dublin yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the scene in the Rathmintin area at around 2pm after receiving a report of a road traffic incident involving a vehicle and the boy, who was 17 months old.

He was taken to Children's Health Ireland in Crumlin where he was later pronounced dead.

It is understood that the boy is from a well-known and respected family in the area.

Fianna Fáil councillor for Tallaght Central, Adam Smyth, said that everyone in the area is in shock, and said his thoughts are with everyone who has been affected.

"Firstly, I just want to pay my respects to the family and their loved ones," he said.

"The community are devastated, but it’s about coming together now to support the family.

"It’s a very supportive community, right across Tallaght, and they’ll come together now to support the family in every way they can."

Gardaí say that a technical examination of the scene has now concluded, and that a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to give support to the family.
