Dublin City Council has launched signage-only zebra crossings, with the intention to install more this year.

Traditionally a zebra crossing was defined as a pedestrian crossing marked by flashing amber beacons with alternate black and white stripes across the road and other road markings.

The Type B Zebra Pedestrian Crossing replaces the requirement for beacons with the use of a sign RUS 066. This sign is a 600mm sign including a fluorescent yellow border.

The guidance around the use of zebra crossings was updated last year by the Department of Transport to allow the use of zebra crossings with signage instead of flashing beacons.

All vehicles must stop and yield right of way to any pedestrian who is waiting to cross or has commenced crossing the road at the zebra pedestrian crossing. This differs from previous requirements that vehicles must stop only when a pedestrian has moved onto the crossing.

Two new zebra crossings on the Blackditch Road in Ballyfermot and on South William Street in the city centre have been installed.

Any new installations of these zebra crossings will be used in zones with a speed limit of 50km/h, low traffic volumes, and good visibility.

Dublin City Council appeals to all road users to familiarise themselves with the new crossings.
