A prisoner officer has undergone surgery after sustaining significant facial wounds during an assault at Mountjoy Prison yesterday afternoon.

The officer is recovering at the Mater Hospital.

In a statement, the Irish Prison Service said any act of violence against prison staff is "unacceptable".

It said gardaí are investigating the incident.

The Prison Officers' Association said it has requested a meeting with Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan following the assault.

In a statement, the association said it "utterly condemns" the assault and said such incidents have been "raised with officials and various ministers over the years."

It added that the association will be "raising this and overall issue of assaults on our members at a meeting we have already requested with the recently appointed Minister O'Callaghan.

"We wish the prison officer who has been assaulted a speedy recovery."

In a post on X yesterday, Minister O'Callaghan said he was "extremely concerned" to hear that the officer was assaulted.

"I wish him a full recovery and can assure people that this serious criminal offence will be investigated thoroughly so that justice will be done," he said.
