The demand for Christmas food vouchers from a Dublin-based charity has been described as "unprecedented".

The manager of the Capuchin Day Centre said that 3,000 vouchers were handed out yesterday within a few hours, but around 30 people went away without one as they had all gone.

However, he said that the centre will help those people too if they can.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, he said: "Our queue started at 4am yesterday morning and by 6am it had stretched around the block (on Bow Street) into Church Street.

"It's unprecedented. We expected an increase in numbers, but we didn't expect anything like that."

Mr Bailey said that a lot of the people were regular clients "but a lot of strangers also ... we don't ask questions or we don't know who people are. We know they're in need when they turn up at our door."

He added that anyone that failed to get a voucher was assured that "they wouldn't go hungry for Christmas. We would look after them."

He said: "We can ensure that they have food for Christmas and we've contacted a number of them already and that's to come back into us that we will provide for them. We will ensure that nobody goes hungry."

He said that the centre was not surprised to see the increase in numbers and every day the centre provides over 700 dinners and 350 breakfasts for people.

"Demand for services has been increasing over the past number of years.

"We’re now providing over 700 dinners every day, so we weren't surprised that the increase in numbers, but it was the actual volume of people that turned up at the same time, and the amount of people that were here and the tickets going so quickly."

Mr Bailey said: "When we started 52 years ago and Brother Kevin of the Capuchin Order started it, we never thought we'd see the demand we're meeting today, and we've grown with the demand."

He added: "Every Wednesday morning we distribute 1,450 food parcels. So that's every Wednesday all throughout the year", and that demand has grown steadily over recent years.
