Going for gold: Dublin crowds to watch Harrington fight

The scene has been set once again in Diamond Park in Dublin's north inner city where crowds will gather tonight to watch their local hero Kellie Harrington in the Olympic lightweight boxing final.

Hundreds of people are expected to watch the fight on a large screen with high hopes that she will retain her gold medal title.

The free event will be open to the public from 9pm tonight.

The Dubliner, who won gold at the delayed Tokyo Olympics three years ago, faces Wenlu Yang of China in the women's 60kg final shortly after 10pm.

Mir Ali, who is originally from India and lives across the road from Kellie Harrington on Portland Row, said he took the day off work to enjoy the build up to the boxing final and described it as a proud moment for him and other neighbours.

Joe Dowling, another local resident, said he said his prayers this morning for Kellie and that everyone in the area "idolises" her.

He said part of her charm is that she has remained humble despite all her achievements.

Poppy Meehan said she has met Kellie many times and described how she has so much time for everyone. Her aunt Edwina Walsh said they believe Kellie can bring home the gold medal but said either way she is a success story.

Another resident said there is "no pressure" on Kellie as they are all so proud of her.

Kellie Harrington's community in Portland Row and the surrounding area are relishing her success so far, bringing such high spirits once again to the area.

They are also proud of the role model she has become for so many young people who have taken up boxing and other sports.

They say that she has shown to boys and girls that through hard work people can achieve their dreams while also advising youngsters "to enjoy it all".

There is immense pride for their Olympic champion regardless of tonight's outcome.

After the semi-final on Saturday night, Kellie Harrington said she cannot wait to get home to celebrate with her community.

She has already sealed her place in the history books and win or lose tonight, she will always be considered gold in their eyes.

In reference to Diamond Park where the fight will be screened live, local councillor Nial Ring said that diamonds are a girl's best friend, but "in this case we hope gold is Kellie's best friend tonight".
