The Croke Park gull who went viral after his cameo appearance on the pitch at last Sunday's All-Ireland senior football final is to remain in the care of an animal rescue charity for at least another five days.

The bird is being cared for at Kildare Wildlife Rescue (KWR) where he is being treated for a wing injury.

KWR centre manager Dan Donoher said the gull is "doing well" and "enjoying his meals of sprats each day".

Mr Donoher said the bird's right wing was not yet fully healed and he will be kept at the centre for at least another five days before being reassessed by the vet team.

"Once fully recovered he will be brought back to near Croke Park - his home range - and will be returned to the wild once more," Mr Donoher added.

The now famous bird captured the heart of football fans watching the Armagh v Galway match on one of the biggest days in the sporting calendar.

Social media was flooded with posts expressing concern for the gull who was removed from the pitch after 24 minutes and placed in the care of Kildare Wildlife Rescue.

He is one of hundreds of wild animals, including many sea birds, cared for by the centre which relies entirely on a team of volunteer rescuers and animal carers in Kildare.

As emails flooded the centre last Sunday from concerned members of the public, the fate of the gull helped to highlight the work of the charity which is trying to raise funds for a wildlife ambulance to enable it to contine rescuing and rehabilitating a range of wild animals.
