Arrest after man in his 50s dies in Finglas stabbing

A man in his 30s has been arrested following the fatal stabbing of a 51-year-old man in Dublin overnight.

The attack took place at Hampton Wood Way in Finglas just after midnight.

Gardaí and emergency services were called to the area at around 12.30am.

Hampton Wood is a relatively recent development of modern homes and apartments off St Margaret's Road.

The man sustained serious injuries after he had been stabbed a number of times. He was found lying on the ground outside.

It is not yet clear if he lived in the area, but it appears there was some type of row and that he was attacked.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to the Mater Hospital, but pronounced dead there in the early hours of this morning.

The scene has been preserved for a forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

Gardaí say they are following a definite line of inquiry.

A man in his 30s has been arrested and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

Gardaí will be interviewing people in the area to see if they heard or saw anything last night and they have issued a general appeal for people with information to contact them at Finglas Garda Station.

Detectives do not believe the attack is related to any feuds or gang related crime in the area.

It is expected a murder investigation will be formally commenced with an incident room and a senior investigating officer established.

It is the second fatal stabbing in Finglas in the last two weeks, but gardaí say they are not connected.

Mark Carroll, 34, died after he was attacked at Collins Place in Finglas last Sunday week.

A murder investigation is under way in that case.
