Convoys of military vehicles left Dublin Port for the Curragh after a Defence Forces mission in Syria ended last month.

The vehicles were transported along the M50 motorway in three groups at 10am, 2pm and 5pm.

They were travelling to the Defence Forces Training Centre in the Curragh, Co Kildare.

The convoys were be made up of articulated lorries, demountable rack offload and pickup system (DROPS) vehicles carrying large shipping containers, and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), the defence forces said in a statement.

"All vehicles are Óglaigh na hÉireann vehicles and easily identifiable as same," the statement added.

There had been warnings of traffic disruption while the convoys were in motion.

The equipment is from the Defence Forces mission in Syria, which is now closed.

The last troops stationed in Syria returned home two weeks ago.
