Hundreds of people have taken part in a pre-budget demonstration in Dublin city this afternoon, which was organised by the Cost of Living Coalition.

The march, which began at the Garden of Remberance in Parnell Square and ended at Leinster House, was supported by a number of political parties and civil society groups.

Organiser Eddie Conlon said the protest was being held to put pressure of the Government ahead of next week's budget. He said the Government has "unprecedented resources" available to it.

Mr Conlon said rent controls, decent pay increases, an increase in the minimum wage and price controls on the cost of electricity were their main demands.

He also said reports of an increase of around €12 in social welfare payments is "completely inadequate".

"People have no excess money and they're struggling from day to day. They needs to put serious money in people’s pockets and they need to seriously do something about the price of electricity and food," Mr Conlon said.
