A teenage boy has appeared before Dublin District Court charged in connection with a robbery and assault of a number of English tourists earlier this month.
The boy, who has an address in Dublin and who cannot be identified because he is a minor, was released on bail subject to stringent conditions.
Shortly after 10pm on Friday 11 August, four English tourists were assaulted and robbed on Fownes Street in Temple Bar by a large group of people.
The injured men, all in their 20s, are members of amateur soccer club St John's Sports from Aylesbury in England, which had travelled to Dublin to play a pre-season friendly against a team from St Kevin's FC in Whitehall, Dublin.
The boy was arrested yesterday morning as part of the garda investigation into the alleged incident.
He appeared before Dublin District Court accused of two charges of assault causing harm and one charge of robbery.
Garda Ruth Finnegan from Pearse Street Station told the court the boy made no reply after he was charged and cautioned.
It was alleged in court that the accused had punched and kicked two of the victims and it was also claimed he had stolen a wallet and necklace.
Garda Finnegan said CCTV footage was obtained from a number of business premises, which she said was of excellent quality and showed the entirety of the incident.
The court also heard that the owners of businesses in Temple Bar fear that they could be threatened for providing the CCTV footage to gardaí.
Applying for bail defence solicitor Luke Staines told the court that remanding his client in custody had to be a matter of last resort given that he is a juvenile.
Garda Finnegan objected to the bail application due to the seriousness of the offences.
Judge Patricia Cronin described the charges as very serious matters, but granted the accused bail subject to very stringent conditions, which she said will be monitored by the court.
They include a curfew between 9pm and 8am, an order to stay out of the Dublin 2 area and signing on daily at a garda station in Dublin.
The teenager was also ordered not to be in contact with the alleged injured parties and owners or staff from businesses in Temple Bar and to provide a mobile phone number, on which he must be contactable at all times.
Judge Cronin said the court expects full compliance with the bail conditions as set.
The teenager was remanded on bail, with the case due to be mentioned in court again next Monday.
A man in his late teens, also arrested yesterday morning and later charged in connection with the incident, is due in court at a later date.
