A man in his 80s is recovering in hospital following an aggravated burglary at his home in Dunree Park in Coolock in Dublin 5 in the early hours of Thursday morning.

At around 4.40am on Thursday, gardaí got a report that a number of men had gained access to the property after forcing their way inside, waking the man who lived there.

The homeowner, a man in his 80s, was injured in an altercation that followed.

The intruders then fled the scene in a silver estate car that was parked outside, driving out of Dunree Park, over a grass margin and outbound on the wrong side of the Malahide Road for a time.

The car is understood to have been a Renault Megane, with a registration plate from the 2000s.

The homeowner was taken to hospital where he is receiving treatment for serious but not life threatening injuries.

The intruders did not manage to steal anything during the incident.

A technical examination of the scene has been conducted by Gardaí and they are appealing for anyone with any information about the burglary, and in particular about the car used in the getaway, to contact them.

They have asked that anyone who may have noticed any erratic driving or any other activity involving a silver 2000s registered estate car between 1am and 5am on Thursday in the Dunree Park, Tonlegee Road, Malahide Road, Edenmore, Donaghmede or Clarehall areas of Dublin, to come forward.

Drivers with relevant dashcam footage are also being asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.
