The funeral of one of two Leaving Certificate students who died while on holidays on the Greek island of Ios has taken place in Dublin.

Max Wall died last Sunday, just two days after his friend and classmate at St Michael's College, Andrew O' Donnell died in a separate incident on the same island.

At the 18-year-old's funeral mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart this morning, Donnybrook parish priest Ciaran O'Carroll described a young man full of joy and potential.

He said Max was larger than life and someone who looked out for people wherever he went, adding it is a tragic reality that he has been taken far too soon.

The service was attended by hundreds of mourners, including Max's parents Niall and Fiona, older brother Charlie, relatives and friends from St Michael's College and the rugby community.

During the service, friend Andrew Lynch presented a number of symbols representing Max's life, including a Manchester United jersey, a pool queue, a megaphone and signed Leinster rugby jersey.

Fr O'Carroll told mourners - who included aide de camp to President Michael D Higgins - that Max survived heart surgery three years ago, and showed bravery and love throughout the difficult situation.

He told those in attendance that the sad reality is that Max has died, but told them while grief is difficult and a hard lesson to learn at such a young age: "You are not alone."

Max was later laid to rest at Kilternan Cemetery.

In messages read out at the church service, friends described Max as someone who "lighted up a room" and who was "an honour" to know.
