A 50-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman in Dublin.

Austin Mangan with an address in Dublin 9 was brought before a special sitting of Dublin District Court last night.

The body of Maud Coffey, who was aged in her 40s, was found at an apartment in Royal Canal Park in Ashtown at around 10am on Friday morning.

Mr Mangan, who was known to the woman, was arrested on Friday evening.

Garda Mark Kelly from Cabra Garda Station told the court that Mr Mangan made no reply after he was charged and cautioned at Finglas Garda Station on Friday night.

Solicitor Peter Connolly requested that his client undergo a psychiatric assessment.

Judge Dermot Simms granted the application and he remanded the accused in custody to Cloverhill Prison, to appear in court again next Friday 20 January.
