A therapist who stabbed a young woman to death in Walkinstown in Dublin 19 years ago has died while serving a life sentence for her murder.

Christopher Newman, who was 80, was jailed for life in September 2005 for the murder of 28-year-old Georgina Eager at her flat in Walkinstown in May 2003.

Unusually he was tried in a London court after travelling to England immediately after the murder.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice in the UK confirmed that Newman died on 20 June.

His trial in London heard he stabbed Ms Eager 29 times on the morning of 22 May 2003. She was originally from Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow but had been working for Newman at his alternative therapy clinic in Walkinstown and lived in a flat beside the clinic. The trial was told she had probably been asleep when the attack started.

Newman claimed he had acted in self-defence and out of provocation but the jury at London's Inner Crown Court found him guilty of murder.

It is understood that he died in hospital.
