A man is in a critical condition in hospital after an assault in Dublin city centre last night.

The incident happened on D'Olier Street, near the junction with Fleet Street, shortly after 2.30am.

The man, in his mid 20s, was treated at the scene for an apparent head injury before being taken to St James's Hospital.

Gardaí searched a house in Co Kildare following the assault and have arrested a man in connection with the incident.

He has been charged and will appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice tomorrow.

A man in his 30s is being held at Pearse Street Garda Station

A forensic examination has been carried out at the scene.
