The Government has approved measures to allow for planning applications for bus corridors under the Bus Connects programme proceed.

It will also allow the National Transport Authority to commence the procurement for "next generation ticketing" using mobile phones.

BusConnects will deliver 230km of bus corridors and 200km of cycling lanes.

The programme will result in an increase of almost 25% in bus services.

Due to the size of the programme, construction of the bus corridors has been phased into three groups to reduce disruption to commuters.

It is currently expected that the first group - consisting of Clongriffin to city centre, Blanchardstown to city centre, Tallaght/Clondalkin to city centre, and Bray to city centre - will begin construction by 2024, with the subsequent groups beginning in 2026 and 2028.

Construction is expected to take two years to complete per corridor and it is anticipated that construction works will be substantially complete by 2030.
