A cyclist in his 40s has died following a road crash in Dublin.

The man, who was riding an electric bicycle, was seriously injured when he hit a pole at Sallymount Avenue in Ranelagh at around 8.30pm yesterday evening.

He was taken to St Vincent's University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The road was closed for a forensic examination, but has since reopened.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses.

They are particularly appealing to anyone with camera footage - including dash cam - who were travelling in the Baggot Street area to the Sallymount Avenue area between 7.45pm and 8.30pm to contact Donnybrook Garda Station on 01 666 9200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
