Gardaí undergo surgery for injuries sustained in Dublin shooting

Two detectives who were shot and injured in a barricade incident in Blanchardstown, west Dublin last night have undergone surgery in hospital.

One had a bullet removed from his foot. The other requires plastic surgery on his hand.

The house at Whitechapel Grove, where shots were fired from, remains sealed off for a forensic examination.

The incident began just after 7pm.

Gardaí say the detectives were responding to reports of shots fired in the area and came to the home of a man whom they knew was under threat from organised crime gangs.

He had recently been served with a garda message, informing him that his life was in danger.

When the gardaí arrived, they were fired on from a sub-machine pistol. At least seven shots were fired at them.

Bullet holes are visible in the driveway of a house and along the driver's side of the garda car.

The driver had just gotten out of the car when gardaí say he had to jump back in to driver's seat and crawl over the gearbox to the passenger side to get out behind the vehicle.

Both gardaí were injured and had to wait for some time behind the car until armed support arrived to bring them to safety.

One was shot in the foot, the other in the hand and foot.

The scene remains sealed off and a 38-year-old man, who was arrested there last night, is being questioned at Blanchardstown Garda Station. He can be held for up to three days.

The suspect is known to gardaí for involvement in serious and organised crime.

The Garda Commissioner said last night's incident was "a volatile situation that could easily have led to loss of life".

Drew Harris described the shooting in a letter to all gardaí as "just one in a long line of examples of gardaí putting their lives on the line to protect others".

The Garda Ombudsman is investigating the discharge of firearms by the garda detectives.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar have commended the two gardaí for their courage, and wished them a speedy recovery.

Minister for Justice Heather Humphreys said last night's incident was a very dangerous and very serious incident and commended the actions of the gardaí.

"I'd also like to wish the two gardaí who were injured last night and wish them a speedy recovery. And again I want to acknowledge the other first responders that were on the scene as well," Ms Humphreys added.

Ms Humphreys thanked the media for respecting the blackout, which she said was very helpful to gardaí.

However, when asked about footage of the incident being circulated on Twitter, the minister said: "We've had very good conversations with the social media companies.

"This is something that I will raise, but we do need to make changes, or there's something we can improve upon. But I'm happy to bring that forward."

She also said she had spoken with Commissioner Harris this morning.
